According to legend, Madhavendra Puri stopped in Puri on his way to Vrindavan to purchase fragrant sandalwood for the divinity of Lord Gopal in Vrindavan more than 500 years ago. He stayed in Remuna for a while, though, and was happy to see the preparations for khira (sweet rice) for Gopal. When he observed the khira being prepared, he intended to sample it in order to prepare it for Lord Gopal in Vrindavan. The Remuna Khirachora Gopinath Temple is a popular tourist destination in Balasore, Odisha.
Madhavendra Puri simply ate what was served to him. He was not, however, offered khira, so he did not taste it and departed the sanctuary. When the temple priests (pujaris) went to bed after conducting the daily worship of Lord Krishna or Sri Gopinath, they dreamed that Gopinath awoke and demanded the khira that the Lord had hidden under His clothes for Madhavendra Puri. The priests discovered the khira and took it to Madhavendra Puri. This is how the area got known as Khirachora Gopinath, which translates as "the Lord who stole khira."
Madhavendra Puri spent some time at an ashram he founded here, and the sandalwood he brought with him is still used by priests to worship the deity today.
When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu entered the temple and was worshiping Lord Gopinath, petals from his body fell upon Chaitanya's head, which he took as Lord Gopinath's blessing and joyfully danced. Khirachora Gopinath Temple is well-known for its khira offerings, whereas Khirachora Gopinath is well-known for its link with Panchalingeshwar, which is 27 kilometers away.
